From Lincoln Heights to Ethika Music: Why I Built IWRITELIFE
I grew up in the Lincoln Heights projects in Washington, DC. I became a songwriter signed to Sony Music Publishing, then VP of A&R at Ethika Music — where I helped an apparel brand land its own publishing deal. Here's what that taught me about ownership.

I grew up in the Lincoln Heights projects in Washington, DC. Nobody there is waiting for permission — you either write your own story or somebody else writes the ending for you. That became the brand's whole thesis: My Life. My Art. My Way.
What the music industry actually taught me
I came up as a songwriter signed to Sony Music Publishing — inside the system, watching exactly how publishing money moves and who ends up holding it. Then I became VP of A&R at Ethika Music, where I did something most music executives never get to do: I helped an apparel company secure its own publishing deal.
That job taught me more than any other. Because when you run A&R for a clothing brand, you stop believing in the wall between music and merch. You watch fans buy the underwear and stream the record — and you realize it was always one audience, one culture, one transaction.
And the pattern that separates the ones who last from the ones who vanish is never talent — it's ownership:
- The artists who own their masters still eat twenty years later.
- The writers who kept their publishing still collect.
- The brands that own their community never beg for reach.
- The ones who traded ownership for a moment spend the rest of the moment paying for it.
When I founded IWRITELIFE in 2020 — a federally trademarked media, technology, and consumer brand — I wasn't starting a clothing line. I was productizing a lesson the industry charges most people everything to learn.
Why a hoodie, a book, and an album are the same product
Every product in this store is the same argument in a different format. PRESSURE STATE is a book about performing when the weight is real. The Mark Hoodie is heavyweight cotton you wear like a declaration. The music is the same philosophy set to rhythm. Fashion, books, and music aren't three businesses — they're three dialects of one language. I know, because at Ethika Music I ran the exact intersection they all meet at.
What I tell every independent creator
Own the lane, whatever the lane is. The tools have never been cheaper, the gatekeepers have never been weaker, and the only thing still for sale is your willingness to do the work without a co-sign. Nobody's coming to validate you. That's not a threat — it's the opportunity.
You're not defined by what happened. You're defined by what you create next.
